Fall Credit Opportunities Still Available at Hill College in Second Eight-Week Semester

Although the fall semester is well underway at Hill College campuses, new and current students still have plenty of opportunities to earn course credits this fall due to the college’s second eight-week semester and December mini-mester.
Registration is now open for both semesters, and Hill College Director of Academic Advising and Success Center Noelle Barnes said the non-traditional start date offers flexibility for non-traditional students.
“Students don’t have to wait for traditional start dates in January or August for their school or education to begin,” said Barnes. “Sometimes life doesn’t always fit into a traditional time. We offer eight-week semesters so students have options to comfortably fit school into their work and family life.”
A combination of core and degree-specific courses in online, face-to-face and hybrid formats are offered for the second eight-week semester, which has a term limit of two courses or eight credit hours. Students may take one course or four credit hours during the December mini-mester.
“Taking two classes for a shorter amount of time can be far more manageable for many students,” Barnes said. “And we can typically find a great schedule for a new student with just two classes, which is more accommodating than trying to find five or six classes needed for a traditional 16-week semester.”
The second eight-week semester is equally as beneficial for students who are already enrolled in courses at a Hill College campus.
“Eight-week courses can accelerate the traditional two-year time frame of an associate degree,” Barnes said. “It can help students who already have credits meet university deadlines, potentially transfer faster or enter (and maybe even climb) the workforce ladder.”
Because the start of the second eight-week semester is still three weeks away, Barnes said courses are continuing to be added.
“Students should let their advisor know if they’re interested in taking a class during the second eight-week semester that isn’t currently listed,” she said.
The second eight-week registration deadline is Oct. 16, and courses begin Oct. 19 and end Dec. 10. The December mini-mester registration deadline is Dec. 11, and courses begin Dec. 14 and end Jan. 4, 2021. Current students who have already met the mandatory advisement requirement for the fall term can add second eight-week classes online in their MyRebel account and should contact their pathway advisor if they experience errors when trying to register.
